There you go, that's my sales pitch. Now lets get down to the details.
-Certified Rustic Cherry.
-All solid hardwood construction.
-Black lacquer inside,then cleared with lacquer and finally, treated with briwax for an extremely durable finish.
-Outside, the Rustic Cherry is clear coated with lacquer. Next it is glazed with dark brown for extra depth. -Finally it is again coated with 3 more coats of clear lacquer.
-Now the Metal. 1 1/2" c channel is rolled to match the radius over the doors. 1 1/2" strap is cut to length for all the other pieces.
- "Rivets" are made to secure the metal to the wood.
- All metal is sanded to remove mill scale and then treated with briwax for a protective finish.
-The inside has holes along the shelves for cable routing and plenty of open space along the back for air flow for your components.
- dimensions are 67" long x 22" deep x 32" tall
- 10 1/2" clearance on top shelf, 9 1/2" clearance on bottom shelf.
-Don't worry about getting a signal to your components, Just pick up an infrared sensor. It works like a champ.

Skate for Homies Art show

Aww Yeah Son!

I was given the opportunity to "paint" a skateboard deck for an art show. This is definitely one of the coolest local programs I have heard of. Its called Skate 4 Homies Foundation . Check out the website for all the info. I had a great time visiting with Todd and Heidi, they have a real upbeat spirit about this program and the whole thing seems to be growing and getting bigger everyday.
I haven't had a chance to do something like this for a long time. It felt real good to be part of something that benefited others... "Gonna chase that feeling."

Here are some pictures of my deck and the rest of the show. Note the "deer" one and the "wicked crazy skull hair" one, painted by my brother-in-law Charles and his wife,Trish.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to do some work up Hobble Creek Canyon. No it wasn't on one of those ridiculous Mansion "cabins". It was on a real cabin. The place was awesome. I have done work for the owners before at a couple other locations. They are great people! They have decided to rent out the cabin for weekend getaways and such, so they asked if I would build some cabinets to replace the washer, dryer and trash compactor. No sense in having all those problematic devices when you a just trying to relax for the weekend.

I built the cabinets to match the existing profiles and all, cleaned up the washer hook ups and added some under cabinet l.e.d. lighting for the new work space. It wasn't the biggest job ever, but it was nice to get up in the mountains and work in peace for the day.

Recent projects

There has be quite a lot of stuff happening this summer and fall. I can't seem to find the ability to sit down and focus on a blog update very often, so I will just cram a bunch of stuff in right now.

Early in the summer I was involved in the remodel of Freedom Credit Union in Provo. Ethereal Furnishings was hired to do all the mill work, cabinets, counter tops and some steel work as well.

Shortly after the Credit Union was finished I was hired to do the cabinets and counter tops for Utah Valley Pediatrics in Saratoga Springs. That job consisted of a reception area, nurse/lab area, hallway storage, pediatrician work station and six exam rooms. Thank you to John with R4 Constructors for being so good to work for on both these projects.

During this time there has also been a bunch of ornamental railing and gate jobs, a hand full of concrete work, and a bunch of little projects in between.

I want to thank all the customers that have given me the chance to help with their projects lately. Thanks to Ben and Andy for helping out when things got a little busy.

"Destroying the competition"

I was going through some pictures on the computer and found this. I had planned on sharing it, but I totally forgot. Anyway I think it's worthy of the blog.
Last fall my Nephew was studying castles in school. He was given an assignment to build a castle that met a list of requirements. He has enjoyed coming over and welding with me in the past, so I guess he thought it would be a good idea to have me help build his castle. As you can see from the picture it got a little big. I think it's safe to say he had the only castle there that could resist the angry hordes of enemies. We even gave it the "soak it in gas and set it on fire" test!

I promise the next post will be real work related.

So, It's been awhile. I have been rather busy so far this year. I wish I could say I have been building piles of custom furniture, but that's not the case. I guess I will just give a run down of what I"ve been up to so far this year. Or at least the "high lights"...

Lets start off with the broken down bathroom in my Provo rental. The last tenant moved out and I figured I better get it done before the next tenant got in. With the help of some amazing friends we got the place looking good. Nothing to elaborate, but it's nice for a rental.
During the process, I discovered the door hardware is the original hardware from when the house was built in 1907. Pretty cool... I thought.

Next, Someone decided it was time to pay us a visit. That's right, Baby Avery was born. Not really work related you say? Well, I had a hard time getting much done for the next week or two! She is definitely the grumpiest of the three, but I am sure she will turn out as well as any of my children can! We love you Avery.

I have to throw this in here. My air compressor gave out again, so I decided it was time to upgrade the tank size. The motor was still good and I rebuilt an old pump that I was hanging on to. I guess for those of you that know me, it goes without saying, "It took longer than I thought". I have had something hanging around in my mind. A comment or compliment I received from a long time friend, saying that my work had a "steampunk" feel to it. So I used this compressor rebuild as an outlet in that direction.

Of course it is tax time, that has also consumed some time this first quarter. There has also been a lot of not so glamorous jobs in the mix this year that seem to keep the bills payed. I won't go into detail on those (so I can keep my lustrous "high end" appeal). ;) But I do want those who helped out with those jobs to know I am extremely appreciative.

Last but not least, I had the opportunity to build a mudroom/boot locker/bench thing for some wonderful people this last month. They just got done building their new home and asked me to build this custom fit piece for them. I think it turned out pretty good. Thank you!!! again to the Ballards for hiring Ethereal Furnishings. I hope I brought a little more beauty to your awesome new home.

A couple of recent projects

I said I was going to post some projects, so here they are.
The first is a media table made of Hard Maple, finished with a dark stain, then a chocolate spray stain to blend any inconsistencies in the wood, then a couple coats of lacquer, then a dark brown glaze and finally a couple more coats of lacquer. Yeah it is a lot of finish but it had to match the existing furniture.
The table also features hand forged scrolls. Now I know what some of you might be thinking. "those are not true scrolls". I know, but I have found over my years as an Iron worker that "true" scrolls are boring. I design my scrolls with personality. So when you get "Hand made one of a kind" from Ethereal Furnishings, it really is one of a kind. Every piece is original and not reproduced. So as I was saying, hand forged scrolls with a "copper vein" powder coat finish.

Next is another media center. Also made of Hard Maple. This time it was because the customer wanted a really light wood. I guess this post goes to show the versatility of Hard Maple.
This piece features a unique design centered around the specific components of the customers media set up. A large shelf for a massive center channel speaker, a decorative top for aesthetic appeal because the t.v. is mounted on the wall directly above the media center, and open slots on the doors for easy viewing of the components displays.
The design style came out of a meeting with the customer and myself. The idea was to have something that had a combination of "Industrial", "Nautical", "Old and Worn" and "heavy".
The metal work on the piece is like every thing I do... hand made. Hammered strap adds substance to the doors and gives it a masculine feel. The metal panels on top are bordered with hammered strap as well, and the actual metal panel is treated with a heating process that almost gives the appearance of cells bumping into each other.
The wood is finished with clear lacquer and given a coat of dark brown glaze to give it the "old and worn" look that was desired. And the inside of the unit was painted with black lacquer to keep the media equipment hidden.

Brandishing a tax deduction.

I thought this was worth while enough to post on here.
It's cold, the economy sucks, work is uncertain... What is one to do? I don't know the answer, but I do know this. If you have frustrations and no way to channel them you will EXPLODE! So here is what I have recently rediscovered, Shotguns.
Do to some "changes" in mine and my kid brother's lives, I decided that we needed to shoot guns to let off a little steam. It just so happens that I have in the past built some furniture for this particular brother, thus converting him into a client of Ethereal Furnishings. so I had the pleasure of taking this client of mine to the Provo gun club compliments of Ethereal Furnishings. It was freezing and the "lifers" put us to shame, but we were back the next week ready for more. I am happy to say, I think there is plenty more where that came from!

I haven't made a post for a while,
I have been busy working on licensing and fun stuff like that. The new website is up and running but not finished. I will have a couple new projects completed soon to post on here. for the time being I thought I would put something up just for fun. I have had a lot of head congestion lately with the legal side of "business ownership", so I figured this would be appropriate.

"Zen box" made from East India Rosewood. Made for a client of Ethereal Furnishings that has a soft spot for star wars...

Anyway, let me know if there are any projects coming up that you would like some help with. Wood work, steel work, home remodeling, what ever you have in mind I can probably provide some assistance.

Superdork!

O.k. then, I found this jointer for $60 bucks. I figured I didn't have much to lose, so I bought it.
I needed to get one for a project I was working on and thought, "this will get the job done, then maybe I will fix it up."
Turns out this is a 1949 Walker Turner model. I finished the project and moved on to another one. When I finally had a little spare time I started tearing it down. In true "Jimmer" fashion I went a little crazy on the project. Every black part you see is powder coated, I wire wheeled the knobs and hardware, rebuilt the motor and resurfaced the top of the table. I also built a cart to roll it around on.
I think it's safe to say I have one of the coolest 1949 jointers around. Also Does this take me another step down the road of "uncool old woodworker guy"?

Bike Modification

A guy in Logan saw some pictures of my bike online and contacted me to make some modifications on his. He drove down to drop off the bike. I converted the xs650 to a hardtail with a 4" stretch and mounted a sportster peanut tank. Good luck with the rest of the project bro!

Custom White Oak front door.

Awhile back I met a very kind woman who lives in Levan. She hired me to build her custom interior rail as well and an arbor for her front yard. The most recent job I did was a White Oak front door for her. She had an idea of what she wanted, but couldn't find it anywhere, so she called me. It's a craftsman style door with Gothic glass windows, she loved it.
